A
bridge will prevent movement of the opposing or adjacent
teeth into the space. This movement can increase plaque
accumulation and trap food, leading to decay or gum
disease.
A bridge can be made by attaching a false tooth (pontic)
to crowns on either side of the gap. This involves
drilling down the teeth either side and may involve
healthy, unfilled teeth.
Another option is an adhesive resin-bonded bridge.
This only requires minimal tooth preparation and the
false tooth is bonded to the adjacent tooth with small
metal wings. This technique is much less destructive
to the teeth than a conventional bridge but can more
easily 'de-bond'. However, should this occur the bridge
is easily reattached.
